5 April 2013

Everything is ready for the 37th Pizolada delle Dolomiti, a classic Italian mountaineer skiing event scheduled for next April 14th on the snowy peaks of the Val di Fassa and Passo San Pellegrino.

The event is being promoted by the Monti Pallidi Sports Union in collaboration with CAI SAT and the Fassa Events Committee, with the valuable contribution of countless volunteers – headed up by Alpine Rescue, the Moena Alpine State Police Academy and the Alpinists’ Association. The race will feature an Absolute category – in a test covering a total altitude difference of 1725 metres over a 16.42 kilometre route – and a Junior category in conjunction with an excursionists’ rally to be held on reduced variants, for a total of 12.4 kilometres on a track with an altitude change of 1045 metres.

This year the Pizolada qualifies as an International test for the world cup “Certified Race ISMF”.  The Italian National Mountaineer Skiing team will also be participating and will surely provide significant traction for the impressive group of die hard and motivated participants who have been signing up in the past few days at the official website for the race, www.lapizolada.com, eager to follow in the tracks of Ivo Zulian and Nadia Scola, winners of the 2012 edition.

The starting points have been set at the valley station for the Col Margherita funicular lift. The competitive race will start at 8:15 a.m. and the excursionists will start at 8:25 a.m. This year the race package has been enriched with an item from the Sportful Second Skin De Luxe line. It can be retrieved along with the race number the day before the event at the Council Hall in the Moena Municipal building, or starting at 6:30 a.m. the day of the competition at the car park for Col Margherita. In the afternoon (at 2: 15) there will be an awards ceremony, with the distribution of prizes for the Absolute category provided by Scarpa, a leading company in mountaineering footwear. The Riccardo Bazzocco Trophy will be awarded to the youngest classified competitive participant. Plus a special prize – a Suunto Vector altimeter watch – will be awarded for the men’s and women’s best times on the excursion track, along with gadgets for all participants. The day’s schedule also calls for musical entertainment, a pasta party and raffle.

“Right now the abundant snowfalls are guaranteeing a perfect snow cover along the entire route,” confirms technical manager Maurizio Dellantonio. “Along the itinerary laid out among the southern slopes of Cima Uomo, the snowpack is consolidating with bearing crusts in the morning hours; in the second part with northern exposure towards Col Margherita the snow is still powdery like in winter. Actual conditions are likely to guarantee an ideal race route. Given these circumstances, the race, which will take place against the backdrop of a persisting winter Dolomite landscape, promises to be a fantastic, high energy show and guaranteed fun for all skinning fans.”
